Formerly, this mansion is a typical ‘mansion’ apartment on the outskirts of Tokyo before BAKOKO transformed it into their new clean and bright home. It is architects Alastair Townsend and Kayoko Ohtsuki, two graduates of London’s Architectural Association (the AA), and the founders of BAKOKO Design Company who had transformed this small 400 square feet mansion into a modern-minimalist flat with optimum use of the spaces. Long ago, ‘Man-shi-yon’ was a euphemism the Japanese used to describe the generic concrete apartment blocks. Now, the culture seems to be moving into more sustainable creativity with preferences for clean and modern living spaces.

The two units range from 1,800 to 2,100 SF. Each is three-bedroom with two master suites, and is equipped with a two-car garage. To the north, south and west, the rooftop decks capture views of the Puget Sound, Seattle cityscape and the beach community below. With spacious living spaces and quality finishes such as glulam beam framing, bamboo floor and fir cabinetry, the Alki Townhouses are both beautiful and practical.

The design response to the home was a series of finely-crafted multi-functional timber boxes nestled around the existing house. A Northern box addition allows winter sun to penetrate deep within the home’s interior, warming the concrete slab provided for thermal mass. Bright colour finishes at the ground level enliven the interior to create a playful, leisurely and carefree characteristic that such a house should embody.
